      SCHOOL COUNCIL

The new rep’s are:

Year 2: Hannah P and Mathew B

Year 3: Ryan and Elizabeth

Year 4: Josh and Chloe

Year 5: Adam and Elle

Year 6: Alex T (Secretary) and Louise (Chair person).

This year our School Council is aiming to help us win the ECO-SCHOOL Bronze Award. They have also set themselves the challenge of getting every class growing vegetables, plants and trees. Here’s how…

Term 1.

They want all of us and our families to think about re-using and recycling paper. The fundraising project is called make a waistcoat out of waste paper…that makes it a waste-coat! Instruction on how to make it will be sent home nearer the time.

Children who pay £1 may wear their waste-coat on October 22nd. A prize will be given to the best KS1 and KS2 designs. For ideas of a waste-coat on the theme of ‘flower power’ look at the School Council notice board outside Y5.

Other progress made so far: We have registered with WAITROSE so that we can exchange their vouchers for free things we can grow in Term 4.  We have registered with the Potato Council for a free potato growing kit that will be delivered in Term 4. We have registered with the Woodland Trust to receive 30 Autumn copse trees in November for us to plant – in anticipation of Term 6. Finally, we have registered with Edible Playgrounds in the hope that we might win their Growing Kits before Christmas.

Term 2.

The money raise by the waste-coats will fund sprouting equipment and seeds so that every class will start growing on 10th November. We’ll sprout all sorts of seeds and pulses. It will be great fun!

All the classes are doing really well recycling their milk cartons which is something new we’ve started this term. Now we need to re-use more paper before it gets recycled. Let’s go for it!

Term 3.

In Term 3 we are doing another fundraising event. This event we are calling ‘Message in a bottle.’  You bring in a 1 or 2 bottle, (recycle-wise), with a  letter asking super markets to only to use recyclable plastics. We are also going to be making sculptures out of the plastic bottles. This day will be a non-uniform. This event is on Tuesday 27th January in 2009.

Term 4.

This term is not going to be a fundraising term but a growing term.

We are going to be growing plants from sunflowers to edible plants. On-going from February 23rd 2009.

Term 5.

This term we are going to be doing yet more fundraising. This fundraiser is going to be a ‘Walk it day.’ This is a link to the Easter Bonnet parade. This event is on Friday 3rd of April.

Term 6.

This term we are going to be growing. We are going to be planting tree saplings which will eventually become a simple tree nursery. On-going from April 20th.

Looking back over the School Year 2007 - 2008. What has your School Council Achieved?

* We launched a 'Go For Great' campaign to encourage great manners with a motto "Great Character - Great Life."  Pupils enjoyed our Manners Quiz and a Prize was given to Aimee Lou in Year 6 who won the competition.

Think about Good Manners with our help: Click here

"Good manners are important so that when visitors see us, we look like an outstanding school with really good manners." (Zac)

* We ran an ANTI BULLYING campaign, launched a Bully Box and asked two teachers - Mrs Pope in KS1 and Mr Stanley in KS2 - to be anti-bullying teachers.

Watch our presentation: <- Flash Movie  or  Windows Movie ->

"Our school will do everything it can to prevent bullying, deal quickly with bullying and support those who are bullied." (Mr W)

How will we do this?
By teaching pupils that bullying is unacceptable inside and outside the school.
By creating an atmosphere in school in which children know they are listened to and their problems taken seriously.
By getting children to talk over their thoughts and feelings about bullying within an atmosphere of trust, acceptance and tolerance.
By putting books in the school library and staffroom on bullying and anti-bullying.
By staff working with parents to discuss worries or concerns.
By making sure all staff know how to promote good behaviour.
By making sure teachers take bullying seriously and investigate any allegations thoroughly.
By staff supervising children carefully.
By making the school grounds stimulating.

* We ran a day during anti-bullying week to raise money for LEPRA who find and cure people of Leprosy. Everyone really enjoyed the martial arts events on that day. "We raised over £400 and cured 19 people of Leprosy. I feel good that we could stop people suffering and being sent away on their own." (Luke)

* We learnt and taught a load of playground games to brighten up playtimes.

Captain Jack

Crocky Crocodile

Eye Spy

Farmer’s In His Den

Red Letter

Wall To Wall

"It was fun learning all sorts of new games. People are all enjoying them." (Kieran)

* We linked with St. David's Primary School which was badly flooded during the summer of 2007. We sent them loads of ideas for their School Council and collected goodies for each class with a card that thanked their teachers for their dedication. We gave friendship bracelets to Years 5 and 6 during their Bristol Visit in June 2008. "There was a flood that destroyed St. David's school. We felt really sorry for them. We thought their teachers were amazing so we sent bags of equipment to say 'We care about you.'" (Lara)

* We launched Wacky Week and Toast Tuesday to raise money for Christian Aid Week in May 2008. We asked teachers to do wacky things that we could sponsor.

See them in all their wonder!

* On Toast Tuesday we bought toast to raise more money. All together we raised over £100.  "It was cool that our teachers did lots of things: guide dogs, fire fighting, climbing, lambing, mucking out rhinos, reading the news at the BBC. Christian Aid will spend the money helping the poorest of the poor." (Abi)

* We started to work towards becoming an ECO SCHOOL by asking Ryan and Luke to plan the changes we need to make to win a Bronze Award. Through the hard work of every child and member of staff, we made progress.

See our Eco Pages and the Eco Schools video: ECO page "Eco Schools has helped us to get better as a school to help and not hurt the environment by turning off lights and computers, recycling, looking after wildlife, talking quietly and tidying away." (Dan)
